Man ordered to pay $60,000 to his ex-wife
The court found that the man had been able to earn more than his wife because of the free time he enjoyed by not taking part in daily chores. The Supremo Tribunal de Justiça ruled, as reported by Oddity Central:
The demand for equality has long been inherent to the idea of justice, so it is not possible to consider that all or much of the housework in a house, of the members of the de facto union, corresponds to the fulfillment of a natural obligation, founded on a duty of justice
The Portuguese court continued:
On the contrary, such a duty calls for a division of tasks as equal as possible, without prejudice to the possibility that the members of that relationship freely agree that one of them does not contribute to the provision of domestic work, in the logic of specializing the contributions of each one.
Husbands fined for not doing their chores
Not many countries have implemented this domestic law. However, other countries like Argentina, which in 2019 ordered an ex-husband to pay $155,541 in compensation to his wife after 27 years together, are already ahead of their time. Moreover, China forced a man to pay $6,406 in 'household debt' to his ex-wife after 10 years of marriage.
