Woman dies after delivering her baby boy
Nulifer Atik, a 49-year-old writer from Surrey, gave birth to a baby boy named Milo. The delivery took 54 hours, and it was rather violent, as she describes her contractions as being hit by a 'sledgehammer'. She wrote a piece for the Daily Mail, where she gives details about her near-death experience. She explained:
I was 41 years old and had just had a baby boy – Milo – following a grueling 54-hour labour. He was my first and only child and while I wasn't expecting the birth to be a picnic, I certainly hadn't envisaged what lay ahead.
Nulifer underwent an emergency C-section, and she finally met Milo before he had to be taken to the intensive care unit. Two days later, while visiting her baby with her husband, she began to feel dizzy, before she eventually 'blacked out'. She wrote for the Daily Mail:
I knew I was dying, and I was okay with that. It may sound flippant and blase to say this but it was true. For the next 28 minutes, as I remained 'unresponsive' while the doctors fought to revive me, I couldn't move, couldn't speak, couldn't open my eyes, or respond in any way to their urgent questioning.
She reveals what she saw in the 'afterlife'
Nulifer Atik recalls her near-death experience, during which she felt a sudden rush of 'total and utter euphoria', instead of the expected terror that comes with knowing one is dying. She wrote:
My head felt light, and my body completely relaxed, almost like it had liquefied. There was no tunnel or light or anyone 'calling' me. I saw nothing but felt everything as I fell back further and further into the darkness.
The new mother remained aware of her surroundings, of the doctors trying to revive her, but she felt like her time was done, and she was in peace. She explained:
Although I couldn't speak or move, I could still feel every stab of the needle and it hurt, yet I couldn't communicate this. I just wanted to be left alone to enjoy the all-encompassing peace.
However, the face of her newborn baby came up in her mind, and she realised she had to come back for Milo. She wrote:
A rush of what felt like ice cold water seeped through my veins as I shot up to a sitting position, gasping for air. [...] I was trembling so much afterwards I couldn't even hold a cup of water for almost an hour.
Nulifer's brush with death helped her feel less scared about dying, as she recalls the experience being 'the most amazing feeling ever'. She concluded with the following words:
I don't worry any more whether there is or isn't an afterlife, nor do I fear pain or suffering in my final moments because I have had a glimpse into what those final moments are like, and they are rapturous.
