The 3 most painful ways to die and the reasons why, according to science

The world is a violent place and as humans we know that our time on Earth is limited. Not only that, throughout our lives we have to deal with death constantly. The deaths of our parents, our pets, but also our own. Sometimes we get sick and are all of a sudden forced to think of our coming end.

When thinking of that, a recurring image is falling asleep without ever waking up. That is quite dreamy. We all know what falling asleep feels like and that knowledge is comforting. But unfortunately, that isn’t how we are all going to go.

Now, thanks to science and the internet, we can prepare ourselves for the worst. Literally. Here is our top 3 of the worst ways to die. Enjoy! (or don’t)

3. Electrocution

A small jolt of static electricity is already quite painful and unpleasant, so just the thought of being ‘properly’ electrocuted sounds awfully gut wrenching.

The reality is even worse. According to an article from Star Insider that looks into the scientific proceedings behind some deaths, electrocution is ‘excruciating.’ Indeed, it is reported that victims of electrocution have their ‘muscles seize’, their ‘bones break’, their ‘skin swell up’ and, sometimes, eyeballs can pop out.

2. Burning

Pompeii is probably the first thing that pops into minds when people think of burning. Even though the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. didn't kill the city's residents, these people still suffered some symptoms of death by burning.

The victims suffered from the heat from the eruption for hours before they died which is one of the reasons that makes death by burning incredibly painful. Indeed, when you are stuck in a fire, you breathe in that hot air. That would lead in internal burns. Moreover, you would be breathing in a lot of smoke which will be incredibly painful.

Finally, because our skin has so many nerve endings, burning would be a sensory overload of excruciating pain coming from everywhere!

Oh, and remember the Pompeii residents, well it’s a good thing that they died prior to lava pouring out. Being caught in lava makes your skin boil and your bones explode, including your skull.

1. Chlorine trifluoride

Before writing this we didn’t know what this was but we have now unlocked a new fear. This colourless, corrosive and very reactive gas condenses into a liquid that destroys everything in its path. It was first discovered in the 1930s by two scientists (thank you).

According to scientist Paul Doherty exposure to this liquid would:

turn your bones to gelatin — your fingers will turn from rods into little rounded stubs.

We’ve put this one at number for the sheer fact that it is a manmade destruction weapon. It’s almost as if human beings want to die painful deaths…
