What is aromatherapy?
The term aromatherapy derives from Latin, with ‘aroma’ meaning pleasant scents and ‘therapy’ meaning treatment. Aromatherapy can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks who used essential oils in their remedies according to historic documents. Some civilisations also essential oils to ward off evil spirits. The term aromatherapy was coined by a French perfumer and chemist René -Maurice Gattefossé in 1937.
Scents used in aromatherapy are often sourced from aromatic plants like flowers, herbs, citrus fruits and such. These scents stimulate mental and physical health through inhalation, but also through an application on the skin.
Despite the increasing research on the effectiveness of aromatherapy, it is still unsure how effective it is. Though there is plenty of scientific evidence to back up the effectiveness of lavender, citrus, and rose oil aromatherapies specifically. The best way to know if it works for you is to give it a try for yourself.
