Why was Diana’s style so unique
According to Agustina Panzoni, trends manager at Depop, Princess Diana mastered the art of mixing high and low, as well as masculine and feminine elements within each outfit – something we see emulated across catwalks to this day.
Panzoni said:
Paparazzi pics of Diana sporting cycling shorts and an oversized sweatshirt look like they could be lifted from the Instagram feeds of Hailey Bieber or Kendall Jenner. Some would say she was doing streetwear before streetwear was ‘a thing'.
Panzoni believes that Diana feels as relevant as ever because so much of what she stood for remains vital to today’s generation, whether it’s having fun with your style or speaking out about mental health.
Diana was very much ahead of the curve. She often appeared in what could be viewed as ‘off-brand’ casualwear.
Farrah-May Archer Boadi, styling team lead at Stitch Fix UK, agrees that it’s Diana’s off-duty wardrobe that’s still inspiring the generations of today.
Archer Boadi commented:
One of Diana’s most stylish moments has to be her leaving the gym in a tailored red coat layered over sportswear – how 2022 is that?
How can you rock Princess Diana’s outfits today?
Diana was known for her love of approachable, casual style.
To achieve the effortless look, Archer Boadi advises trying pleated wide-leg trousers with a crisp white shirt and an oversized blazer. It can be easily dressed up with heels or dressed down with trainers.
Diana became so well known for her bold blazers and coats – and given the prevalence of bright colours and dopamine dressing styles across this autumn/winter trends, this is an easy look to recreate.
Try a statement blazer or coloured coat layered over a ribbed knit and complete the look with boots and jeans.
Perhaps one of her most iconic looks, Diana’s revenge dress is still talked about today. You can achieve it by wearing something outside of your comfort zone, but that also suits you perfectly and brings you a new level of confidence.
