There are many different causes for hair loss in women, from female pattern baldness (FPB) to stress, hormonal issues, or poor hair habits. Whilst there is unfortunately no cure for FPB, if your hair loss is due to poor hair habits (like too-tight ponytails), or hormonal changes like pregnancy and post-partum life, hair-oiling is a method that might help your hair regain its volume and lustre!
What is hair oiling?
Hair oiling is the method of massaging natural oils into the scalp (and hair if desired) to promote scalp health, increase moisture levels, and promote hair growth. This practice is most beneficial the night before you wash your hair, or a few hours before you wash your hair, as it allows the oil to sit and penetrate the hair shaft.
How does it work and why is hair oiling beneficial?
Massaging your head with oil promotes hair growth by increasing blood circulation in the scalp. This brings much-needed nutrients to your hair follicles, helping them to increase the rate of hair growth and health of hair.
Massaging your scalp also reduces stress levels, one of the key causes of hair loss. And, it can help to increase your hair's fullness by preventing any further damage to your locks by strengthening the hair shaft and coating the root in fatty acids, which prevents your hair from being dry and brittle, resulting in breakage.
How to hair oil:
- Apply a few drops of your chosen oil onto your fingertips or directly onto your scalp. Castor, almond, or coconut oil are the best options for hair growth, and you can add in lavender or rosemary essential oil for additional hair growth benefits!
- Massage your whole scalp, paying special attention to your hairline and parting, using firm circular motions.
- Let the oil sit for at least two hours, or preferably overnight (just make sure you tie up your hair in a protective hairstyle).
- Cleanse your hair using a gentle sulphate-free shampoo. You might find that you need to double-cleanse your hair to ensure all the oil has been rinsed away.
- Style as normal!
