This tab is actually called a ‘locker loop’ in the US. They appeared there in the 1960s and they allowed American students to hang their shirts on the hooks in their cloakroom during physical education classes.

Subsequently, the locker loop was used as an indication of someone’s romantic availability. If the person wearing the shirt cut out the loop, this indicated that he was in a relationship.
