Several factors which encourage onychomycosis
- Exposure to hot and humid environments, such as communal showers
- Wearing wet socks or tights
- Wearing shoes that are too small
- Through injury, or while cutting your nails
What are the consequences?
The fungus, although it rarely causes pain or itching, can cause the skin to crack and tear, which facilitates entry to bacteria.
Treatment
There are many ways to prevent and cure nail fungus. The best way is to take care of your hygiene and to dry your feet after a shower or bath. It is advisable to wear shoes which fit well.
If you unfortunately already have fungus, you could buy over-the-counter medicine to try and contain the infection from spreading to other toes but it is also recommended to go see your dermatologist as soon as you detect something unusual.
