Health risk
The sauce which is typically served with fish has been found to contain sulphites which have not been mentioned on the label. Although rare, some people are allergic to this chemical and could experience symptoms that range from mild wheezing to life-threatening reactions, especially among people who have asthma, according to Cleveland Clinic. The FSA in a statement warning the public about the labelling error said:
Due to mis-packing, Bramwells Tartare Sauce labels have been incorrectly applied to Bramwells Horseradish Sauce. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.
The affected products are the 175g pack size with a batch code of 2118 with best before dates of April 2023. The statement continued:
If you have bought the above product and have a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites, do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.
Do not eat
Aldi posted a public across its stores warning customers to not eat the sauce but to return it for full refund.
As a precautionary measure our supplier is recalling an isolated batch of Bramwells Tartare Sauce because it may contain undeclared sulphites. Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given. We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation.
