Rodents such as rats and mice are a huge issue for food safety. According to Quality Assurance Mag, the presence of such pests must be treated with seriousness in food facilities because they can contaminate food and cause illnesses. Businesses serving food are required by law to maintain a certain level of hygiene which includes pest control.

But shockingly, even huge companies such as KFC might fail to maintain proper pest control sometimes. As reported by Mirror, a tourist who was visiting Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival popped into a KFC on August 14 for some quick food. While queuing, they were horrified when they noticed what was clearly a rat’s tail hanging from the ceiling.

Customer left disgusted after spotting rat’s tail at KFC

The disgusted customer, who wishes to remain anonymous, snapped a photo of the scene. They then complained to the restaurant, who much to the diner’s dismay, did not take any substantial action.

The customer told Edinburgh Live,

On the day, they didn’t remove anyone eating downstairs, breathing in the fumes or the dead rat in the air vent, they just stopped people going downstairs to see it.

The diner then raised the issue with KFC's online care team on August 16. The customer was once again disappointed by KFC’s response. They said,

After a long back and forth they, responded on August 26 to say that the manager has said the lobby is closed - which I believe is just the downstairs bit - as it had been open everyday since. I’m not sure if it’s open now as I’m not in Edinburgh at the moment.

KFC’s response to the complaint

As per Mirror, KFC has responded to the incident saying that they called pest control to the site immediately and also refunded the customer’s meal.

A KFC spokesperson is quoted as saying,

Operating responsibly is our number one priority and we have strict processes in place to ensure the quality and hygiene standards of all our restaurants.
The team called in pest control immediately who visited the restaurant, dealt with the issue and checked all procedures.
But ultimately, this wasn’t a great experience, and we never want to leave our guests disappointed, so we’ve already refunded their meal.
