What is in this super drink?
There are two kinds of kefir. Fruit kefir (also called water kefir) and milk kefir. Milk kefir is made from casein, the protein contained in milk. To obtain this kefir, the kefir grains, a leaven made up of yeast and bacteria, are left to ferment in cow, goat, or sheep milk.
Fruit kefir, on the other hand, is made from smaller grains that are fermented in water or tea, to which dried fruit and lemon are added. This super drink promotes digestion, restores the intestinal flora, and strengthens the immune system.
How does kefir boost the immune system?
It is possible to strengthen the immune system through diet, and drinking kefir is one way to do this! It contains many nutrients, such as biotin and folate, which boost the immune system and protect the cells. It also contains probiotics: living micro-organisms that act positively on the body. By strengthening the intestinal flora with fermented food or drinks, we also strengthen our immune defences.
How does kefir aid digestion?
While fruit kefir is richer in vitamins and antioxidants, which provide energy, milk kefir facilitates digestion. The fermentation of the kefir reduces the lactose content of milk, that infamous sugar to which some people are intolerant. Thanks to the numerous bacteria it contains, kefir also ensures the proper functioning of the digestive system and regulates the acidity of the stomach.
How does kefir treat skin problems?
Known for its beneficial effects on the intestinal flora, kefir can also be the skin's best ally. As we know, eczema and acne are due to poor permeability of the digestive system, or an unbalanced intestinal flora. The consumption of kefir, by facilitating digestion, has a positive effect on the skin and in particular on eczema, psoriasis, and other skin problems.
How do you make your own kefir?
- Have we convinced you of the virtues of kefir? It’s very simple to make your own home-made version!
- Start by buying kefir grains (you can find them in most organic shops and on the internet)
- Then pour the seeds (50 to 70 grams per 1.5 litres of mixture) into a container of about 1.5 litres
- Then add water and ingredients such as dried figs, lemon, or brown sugar
- Place the mixture at room temperature, away from any light, and cover with a cloth
- After 24 hours, remove any ingredients that rise to the surface and filter the drink
- Drink the mixture the next day, on an empty stomach if possible before breakfast.
