While some of us might be inclined to think of its strange shape as just a matter of aesthetics, according to a Reader’s Digest article, it mostly definitely has been designed with a very specific purpose in mind.
McFlurry’s square handle aids the blending machine
The spoon that is served with McFlurry comes with a weird handle that happens to be square in shape and hollow inside. This spoon, which could look like a big square straw has in fact been ingeniously designed by McDonald’s to help in the process of blending McFlurry.
Once the soft-serve machine fills the McFlurry cup with ice-cream, McDonald’s employees then have to put in the toppings of the customer’s choice and mix everything in. The handle of the spoon is at this point fitted snugly into a machine which does all the hard work of blending the toppings into the ice-cream.
Once things are creamy and smooth, the spoon is slid off the machine and your McFlurry is ready to be enjoyed.
McFlurry spoon’s weird shape serves many purposes
McFlurry is one of the most popular items on the McDonald’s menu. According to Mashed, it exists in the McDonald’s menu in 99 countries. Surprisingly, it was actually first invented in Canada by a franchisee named Ron McLellan in 1995.
As per the report, the irregularly long shape of the McFlurry spoon is also so that it is easier to fit into the stirring machine. Also being hollow, it is convenient for the company to pack and ship them away easily to far-off countries.
