McDonald’s collectible toys
McDonald’s collectible that came with the Cactus Plant Flea Market Box have been a hit with fans, because of its nostalgic charm that took them straight to their childhoods. The four toys offered are Grimace, the Hamburglar and Birdie, as well as the apparel brand’s mascot Cactus Buddy.
As reported by CNBC, these limited-edition toys have been popping up all over the Internet with people looking to make substantial money off of them.
One seller is asking an eye-watering $300,000 for them, while there’s another quoting $25,000 for an unopened Happy Meal toy.
One eBay listing that had 150 sealed toys was sold for $2,400 on Oct. 6. As per the report, a dozen other 150-count cases have also sold for as much as $1,900. So clearly, serious collectors are paying up to have one of these toys.
Why are they so highly valued
As per a 2018 article by Today, McDonald’s toys are highly prized and some vintage McDonald’s toys can be sold for serious big bucks.
The article quotes Gary Sohmers, from ‘Antiques Roadshow’ series, who states the reason for this as,
As with any collectibles category, the main factors of value are supply and demand, impacted often by a 'nostalgia curve' based on generational change and new media.
So in short, like any other objects, the McDonald’s toy collectibles can be worth a lot to some people, depending on their rarity and nostalgic value, even though to others, they might just be just plastic toys.
With there being a history of many McDonald’s vintage collectibles being sold in the market for such high valuation, it is quiet inevitable that there are many people out there looking to cash in on the McDonald’s nostalgia who stock up on the toys to offload them at high prices later.
We can probably expect to see many more such listings pop up the older the collection gets. In the mean time, definitely don't be in a hurry to throw out your old McDonald's toys.
