Sainsbury’s new frozen food initiative
The store would also have a walk-in freezer with surplus foods which would be made available to people for free. These are foods which are perfectly edible but which might have otherwise been wasted.
The supermarket aims to make people more aware of the benefits of frozen food. The store will have a wide assortment of frozen food products including fruit and veg, dairy, meat, fish and baked goods.
As per the report, the company hopes that the temporary store would help people to learn more about how to properly freeze food which would help them to reduce wastage while also saving money on grocery.
Sainsbury’s aim is to combat food waste
The report quoted Ruth Cranston, Sainsbury’s corporate responsibility and sustainability director, who said,
When people think about climate change, food waste often gets overlooked.
That is why we are launching Sainsfreeze, to help customers try and combat food waste and learn handy hints and top tips along the way.
Innovative freezing not only allows us to save food we would otherwise have thrown away, but also to buy reduced food close to its use-by date, saving even more money on the weekly grocery bill.
