A little confusion

According to theNutella adverts, the spread enjoyed by millions, whether at breakfast or as a snack, is good for you. What's more, communication from the brand highlights the fact thatNutellacontains neither artificial colours or preservatives.

A graphic recently published on Reddit and created by a consumer association based in Hamburg, Germany highlighted the composition of the spread. You can see from the chart that it is made up of 5 ingredients: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, milk powder, and cocoa.

More than 50% sugar

From the image, you can see that sugar makes up half of the tub of Nutella. According to the nutritional information, Nutella contains 21 grams of sugar per 37 grams of spread, which corresponds to more than half. According to Ferrero the company that makes the spread, each jar of the spread should contain 50 hazelnuts.

Enjoy with moderation

The company also said that 'One of Ferrero's nutritional principles is that small portions help consumers eat their favourite foods in moderation and labelling all our products allows consumers to make informed choices and help to ensure that Nutella can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet'. Perhaps we'll now think twice before layering the spread on top of our next slice of toast.
