As food, avocados are incredibly nutritious and very healthy for us. That is, of course, unless they haven’t been washed properly since harmful bacteria can penetrate the skin. But that aside, there is one thing that had been annoying lots of people about avocados, and that is how quickly they turn brown and become inedible.
It’s difficult to know when avocados are just right
Scanning the avocado section in supermarkets has become very common practice nowadays. How do you know when they are ripe enough? This even continues when you get home and we all have that moment of doubt in which we hope that we’ve made the right choice and have a nicely matured avocado.
But how should you store them? Once they have been cut into, you can literally watch them turn brown and become inedible, as this usually tends to happen within a few days. While there are more than enough tips you can try to help speed up the ripening process, there aren’t that many on how to keep your avocados fresh for longer.
One simple trick could change everything
However, one annoyed mother seems to have found the solution we’ve all been waiting for, and with the help of another food that you probably already have in the fridge, no less! So as not to have to use environmentally harmful plastic packaging, Cherry Gadded started wrapping her avocados in lettuce leaves and then storing them in the fridge. She posted proof that this unusual trick works on Facebook:
‘Sort of accidentally I discovered that I have been throwing away 1st class food wrap. Lettuce leaves, primarily the outer ones that are a bit harder, make excellent food wrap! Since they’re designed for that purpose in the first place.’
Her tip has since inspired thousands of users on social media. Thank you for your helpful advice that is finally putting an end to this increasingly common problem. So, what are you waiting for?
