What is listeria monocytogenes?
Listeria monocytogenes, more commonly known simply as listeria, is a type of bacteria. If consumed, it can cause listeriosis, a type of food poisoning which causes flu-like symptoms. Listeria is most commonly found in unpasteurised dairy products, soft cheeses and chilled ready-to-eat foods such as deli meats, pâté and ready-made sandwiches.
Most people with listeriosis will experience no symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms such as high temperature, sickness and diarrhoea, aches and pains and chills. However, listeria can be very serious for pregnant women, people over the age of 65, and people with weakened immune systems.
