Empty your freezer before going on vacation
If you are going to be away for a while, it is advisable to empty your freezer and remove the excess ice so that you don't have any unpleasant surprises when you return home.
Among the most common unpleasant surprises is a power cut which causes the freezer to shut down, having a direct impact on the conservation of the food inside. If the cold chain has been broken, the food is no longer edible. But sometimes, a power cut can occur without us noticing it or without us being present to notice it.
Water and a coin
Here's a tip to find out if your freezer has had a power cut while you were away. This tip is extremely simple, all you need is a water glass and a coin.
Fill the glass with water and put it in the freezer. Once the water has frozen, place the coin on the top of the ice in the glass, in the centre.
This way you can easily tell if a power failure has occurred. If the coin has remained in its place on the top of the ice or in the middle of the glass, the preserved food is edible. On the other hand, if you find the coin at the bottom of the glass, this means that the ice has melted because the freezer stopped working. In this case, you will have to get rid of the food.
