Love it or hate it, vacuum cleaning is an essential household chore that reduces the amount of dust you breathe in while staying indoors. And since there’s no way you can avoid it, it can be good to learn a few hacks that will help you get the most out of it. From finding tiny items in the house without getting them sucked into the appliance to reaching those spaces that have been collecting dust for years, here are the tips you’ll love.

1. Use a squeeze bottle cap on the end of the hose
If you need to vacuum up some dust or crumbs in crevices or tight spots, put the cap from a squeeze bottle on the end of the hose. It will fit pretty perfectly and the suction from the appliance will keep the cap in place as you clean.
2. A paper towel tube can do the job
Why not push an empty paper towel tube onto the end of your vacuum’s hose and use it to get into crevices and window tracks? You can even crush up the tube’s edges to make sure it really gets into spaces.
3. Use old tights to find small and lost pieces
Small objects such as coins and pieces of jewellery dropped around the house can easily be recovered using your vacuum cleaner. Slip some old tights or stockings over the end of the hose and look for them under a sofa or in the crevices without any risk of getting them sucked in.
4. Remove hair from the roller with a seam ripper
Most frequently used vacuum cleaners have a substantial amount of hair wrapped about their roller. Luckily, you can fix it with a simple seam ripper.
5. Keep your walls clean with some masking tape
To avoid getting scuff marks on your walls, use some masking or painter’s tape on the sides of your vacuum. This way, you can work faster without worrying about messing up your walls and doorways as you go.
6. Fight the dents by putting ice on your rug after you vacuum
If you have a plush-ish carpet under your dining room table and the table/chair legs are starting to leave dents, ice can come to your rescue. Vacuum the rug as usual and then let an ice cube melt in each dent. Leave it overnight and the dents should be gone by the morning.
