What Asda actually stands for
Turns out Asda stands for Asquith and Dairies. As per Companies History, the company we now know as Asda was founded in 1949 in Leeds, and named Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Limited.
In 1965, Associated Dairies had a big merger with Asquith's chain of three supermarkets, and that led to the company being renamed as ASDA which is comprised of the first two letters of Asquith and Dairies.

People did not realise what Asda stands for
The mystery of Asda’s name was brought to the fore when an old Tweet by Alastair Stewart, an English journalist and newscaster for GB News resurfaced. The Tweet stated,
Without @Google, do you know what the name @asda derives from?
The answers in the thread reveals that most people still associate the original pre-merger company name with Asda, and are unaware of the renamed 'Asquith and Dairies' name associated with the supermarket since 1965.
Many people responded with,
Associated Dairies
Another ventured a confident (but erroneous) answer,
As a northerner easy, associated dairies, also think founder was Asquith
One exasperated person commented,
I know NOTHING without Google anymore!
That's definitely something most of us can definitely relate to.
