The uses of a cheese grater
A Reddit user started a conversation about the subject in the Reddit page Casual UK.
The poster shared a photo of the fourth side of a cheese grater and asked,
Does anybody ever use this part of the grater? What is it even for??
There were people who commented with humorous quips in response saying it didn't have much use except for hurting their knuckles, while there were others who responded with equally befuddled comments.
It was clear from the discussion that much like the original poster, many people in the thread did not have a clear idea as to what its actual purpose was.
The actual purpose of the fourth side of the cheese grater
Fortunately, there were people who poured in with some concrete answers, offering that it was for nutmeg and lemon zest.
According to Washington Post, the largest side of the cheese grater is for different cheese or even produce such as grated apples or potatoes for cakes or fritters.
The smaller shredding hole is to finely shred cheese like parmesan to be used as toppings etc. This can also be used to shred toasted bread into breadcrumbs.
The slicing hole is to be used to slice vegetables and fruits or even cheese into thin curls.
Finally, just as some Redditors suggested, the fourth side of the cheese grater is used to grate seasonings like citrus zest, garlic, nutmeg and hardened brown sugar into a fine and easily-dissolvable consistency.
