Starving and aggressive
A couple in Maine recently encountered an unexpected guest while renovating their newly purchased home - an abandoned puppy.
The new homeowners discovered the malnourished pit bull mix inside a closet, where it had seemingly been left for an undetermined amount of time. The police who are investigating the case confirmed that the property has been vacant for some time before the couple started the works.
The dog, who acted aggressively when authorities responded to the scene last Wednesday, needed food and medical care.
Caribou Police officer Douglas Bell also confirmed that, judging by its state, the dog has been previously neglected.
He said:
As you can tell the pup has not been properly cared for in quite some time.
‘The dog is currently safe’
As a result of the police appeal, the owner of the neglected puppy has been identified and charged with animal cruelty. He was banned from possessing any animals in the future and given a fine.
Bell believes that as the puppy was abandoned while the property was vacant, there could be a case of house-squatting taking place, with the squatters leaving the animal behind.
The force also confirmed that the pooch is currently safe and being provided with the care he needs.
