In Buenos Aires’ old zoo, you could always hear the lion’s roars and the cries of hundreds of other animals. Despite these statements, officials had only partially fulfilled the promises they made in July 2016. Some condors were freed and 360 other animals that were saved from trafficking were moved to other institutions. But no animal that belonged to the city of Buenos Aires has been moved.
Last year in May, park officials took to the floor to discuss reorganizing the park but have still not discussed the situation and conditions of the animals. Charity organizations such as Fundación Azara have made complaints about the run-down environment in which the animals have been living for almost a year. They claim that the works planned by Buenos Aires will not include improving the conditions of the animal’s lives.
To justify these conditions, spokespeople for the mayor have referred to complications that arose due to the zoo closing, that the city has to deal with before the animals can legally be moved to other reserves. They say that they haven’t had time to find other solutions yet.
