Three spaniel puppies were heartlessly abandoned by their owners and discovered in a box by a pile of rubbish beside a road. The RSPCA fear that the incident has to do with the cost-of-living crisis. The charity is appealing for information in a bid to find cruel animal abusers who had the heart to dump these pooches right before Christmas.

Dumped just before Christmas

Three adorable spaniel puppieswere just weeks old when they were abandoned in a cardboard box and found near a pile of rubbish by the side of a road near Wiltshire, England. The incident happened on December 21, right before Christmas.

The poor pooches were underweight and mite-ridden. They were taken in by the RSPCA and rushed to the vet.

The charity gave the three of them Christmas-themed names - Mary, Holly and Rudey - in a nod to the time of the year they were found.

Neglected and underweight

RSPCA animal rescue officer Freya Lamb is now investigating the case of cruel abandonment.

She said:

These poor puppies are all sadly underweight and suffering from ear mites.

According to her, one of the dogs also has ‘cherry eye’ which needs vet treatment. The tiny pooches are ‘very nervous and scared’ and don't want to go near anyone.

Victims of the cost of living crisis

Mary, Holly and Rudey have become some of the latest animals to be dumped, as many Brits struggle to cover the bills this winter.

The RSPCA reports a 25% rise in abandonment incidents being dealt with by its teams.

Dermot Murphy, chief inspectorate officer at the RSPCA, said:

We understand that sometimes the unexpected can happen - the pandemic and cost of living crisis proved that - but there is never an excuse to abandon an animal.

He advises that there are always other options for anyone who has fallen on hard times and can no longer afford to keep their pet.

The RSPCA fears that more animals will be neglected and abandoned by owners during the cost of living crisis. Head to RSPCA's website to learn more about it and support its vital animal welfare work.
