Heartbreaking discovery
The SSPCA were called to the area just south of the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh, Scotland, on October 9 after a member of the public made a heartbreaking discovery. While walking their dog they came across two abandoned puppies. The devastating scene saw one of them, a male, dead while another one, a female, was barely alive.
SSPCA inspector Tracy Dow commented:
The female puppy was found curled up next to her deceased brother.
The poor pooch was taken home, washed, and fed by her kindhearted rescuer while they were waiting for the SSPCA volunteer to arrive.
The charity believes the puppies are from a litter that was recently abandoned and rescued in a nearby small town on the outskirts of the same hills. It appears the tiny dogs split up and headed in different directions.
‘She has been struggling to survive’
According to the charity, the female puppy is approximately 14 weeks old and is tan in colour. She is in ‘really poor condition’, Edinburgh News writes.
Tracy Dow added:
It is clear she has been struggling to survive in the woods as she is emaciated and her teeth are dirty from trying to find food. We are all extremely saddened by the discovery and our hearts go out to the male puppy who did not make it.
Thankfully, the little pooch is now safe and being cared for by one of the SSPCA’s rescue and rehoming centres. The charity is unsure how many pups were in the litter the two found puppies are part of and are asking members of the public in the local area to be vigilant.
The SSPCA added:
We understand that people’s circumstances can change, but this is not the right way to give up an animal and these dogs would have been caused a great amount of distress.
