Jessica Crane, member of the expedition, recorded the sounds with a tape recorder while they spotted several whales, but none of the animals they saw was to blame for the strange sounds.
They soon identified them: they were frank whales, a very difficult species to find. According to Phillip Clapham, director of the cetacean program in Alaska, these animals are part of a herd of 30 to 50 that swim in the western Pacific.
