Found in a rubbish bin
Eight-week-old cocker spaniel, Winnie, had been dumped in the rubbish bin outside a store and found by a concerned passer-by. The pup was rushed to the vet and then came under the care of the Cotswold Cats & Dogs Home.
Winnie’s elbow was ‘fused at an angle’ which means she was unable to walk on her front leg. According to the rescue, vets ‘diagnosed the problem as a congenital elbow dislocation with fusion’, which means that the pup will need to have her damaged leg removed.
The injury could have happened at birth and left untreated or could have happened a few weeks ago. But they are confident Winnie will be able to learn to get around on the three remaining legs and lead a happy and fulfilled life.
The rescue assumes the previous owner couldn’t afford her care so decided to abandon her. The RSPCA (England & Wales) is currently appealing for any information, Gloucestershire Live writes.
'She is such a fun-loving girl'
Despite what the pooch has been through, she is very friendly and is already learning new tricks with senior animal care assistant Ebony Poole, who fell in love with the adorable fur-ball and offered her a foster home.
Ebony said:
She is such a fun-loving girl. She loves her playtime and will curl up on my lap for a good nap afterwards. She doesn’t realise how loved she is.
Sadly, the poor pup has also suffered two seizures, which are also being investigated by vets. They will have to wait another 15 weeks to operate on her leg. But then she will recover and rehabilitate with sessions of physiotherapy.
Ebony added:
For now, we are just managing her as she is and making sure she is comfortable, happy, and well-loved.
Appealing for donations
The rescue expects Winnie to make a full recovery and live a very normal, happy life as a dog with three legs, but the operation and care will run into thousands of pounds. The centre is asking for ‘any donation, big or small’ to finance the surgery and subsequent physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. You can support Winnie here. All money raised will first be used on whatever treatment and care Winnie needs, with any additional funds going towards other animals at the centre.
