First of all, the USB ports in a car cannot provide enough power to charge a smartphone. Plugging a phone into a low-powered USB port will be of little use since the port will not be able to provide the necessary power. So the smartphone will be charged very little, if at all... Driving in an old car
This can also damage the phone's charger, but also the vehicle's battery. The older the phone, the more likely it is that the car battery will run down. However, this is usually not a problem if the vehicle is new.
