When it comes to utilising baking soda to neutralise odours, simply putting an open container of it in a room or container overnight can assist. You can also use it to get rid of more ingrained, specialised, or difficult-to-reach odours. Baking soda can be used in the following seven different ways.
Drains
Baking soda and vinegar are popular for unblocking drains, but this technique can also remove foul odours from them. Pour a few tablespoons of baking soda down a drain along with some warm white vinegar and run the hot water tap for a few minutes. This will help deodorise anything generating a scent.
Household surfaces
Baking soda can be used to remove odours from most household surfaces. Clean up whatever you've spilt on the surface, then mix a baking soda solution and gently scrub them down. This method also works on carpets that have been extensively discoloured.
Shoes
If the sweat from your feet has caused your shoes to smell, sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda into them. Leave them to rest overnight, then pour them into the bin or sink the next day. If you have sensitive skin, use caution with this procedure because the product may irritate it.
Hoover
If your vacuum cleaner stinks, you may solve the problem by spraying a little bicarbonate of soda on the carpet before using it. However, don't go crazy and avoid using baking soda on wood floors, as it will discolour them.
Dishwasher
Dishwashers have a reputation for being smelly because they clean dirty dishes and are likely full of expired food. If your dishwasher smells musty, empty it and make sure the filter isn't clogged with food. Run a hot wash with a cup of baking soda.
Bins
There isn't much you can do about the scent of bins. Adding a teaspoon of baking soda to a new bag every time you replace your bin bag, on the other hand, may help to absorb any foul odours.
Fridge
To get rid of odours in the fridge, use bicarbonate of soda. Place a small basin or package of baking soda in the refrigerator. In between more thorough cleanings, this will keep the item smelling fresh
