A vulva-shaped rocket could be launched into space

From skyscrapers to rockets, we inhabit a world full of phallic design. But a German feminst group is showing us that it doesn’t have to be that way.

German feminist group, Wer Braucht Feminismus? (which translates to ‘who needs feminism?’) has created a distinct vulval spaceship. What’s more, it’s apparently more convenient for space travel than its traditional phallic counterpart.

Bringing gender equality to the cosmos

The ship was created by WBF Aeronautics to better represent humankind in space by increasing female representation in space and creating more space diversity. The group said: ‘We want to restore gender equality to the cosmos.’

Most spacecrafts have a cylindrical, elongated shape, but Jeff Bezos took that one step further when he launched his Blue Origin rocket last year, experiencing widespread ridicule over its extremely phallic shape. Most people believe that rockets have to be shaped like this for engineering and scientific reasons.

However, according to Dr. Lucia Hartmann, head of WBF Aeronautics and inventor of the vulva spaceship:

The spaceship’s shape is surprisingly aerodynamic, creating way less drag than when the vehicle punches through the Earth’s atmosphere. Due to this optimised V-shape, it guarantees maximum fuel efficiency with an exterior made of reinforced carbon which enables it to withstand the most extreme temperatures.

A petition to launch the rocket

The team from WBF Aeronautics have now started a petition on change.org to launch the rocket. They need 500,000 signatures for it to be considered by the European Space Agency.

On the petition, they write:

The vulva spaceship represents inclusivity, varying from traditional shapes. Thus, the project adds another dimension to the representation of humanity in space and is communicating to the world that anyone has a place in the universe, regardless of physical characteristics.

The group has started the hashtag #spaceisforeveryone.
