It was announced on Sunday, July 20, 2024, that President Joe Biden would be stepping down from the presidential race after numerous calls from within his own party. In a statement, Biden said it was the ‘greatest honour’ to serve his country and that it was ‘in the best interest of my party and the country’ for him to withdraw from the race, as reported by BBC News.

Biden, who has been facing claims he is 'too old' to be President, has endorsed his Vice-President, Kamala Harris to replace him in the race. Speaking about Biden’s decision, Kamala said she was ‘honoured’ and would ‘earn and win this nomination’.

As we wait to find out whether or not Harris will be the new candidate - which may not happen until the Democratic National Convention in August - did you know that Donald Trump, who recently survived an assassination attempt, has previously donated to Kamala’s campaign?

Donald Trump once donated to Kamala Harris’ campaign

As mentioned above, Kamala Harris may be the new nominee of the Democratic Party in the presidential race, potentially making her Donald Trump’s new opponent. As per Newsweek, the former President is currently going viral as he had once donated to Harris’ campaign.

According to reports, Trump donated $5,000 to Harris's campaign on September 26, 2011, and a second time on February 20, 2013, with a sum of $1,000, back when Harris was running for California attorney general.

Moreover, as reported by Newsweek, Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, also donated $2,000 in 2014 to Harris’ campaign. At the time, a spokesperson for Kamala said that she did ‘not solicit’ Trump to donate.

In 2015, Harrisdonated the money to a non-profit organisation that ‘advocates for civil and human rights for Central Americans’ when Donald Trump started his first presidential campaign.

Now that the US potentially has a new candidate in the presidential race, what do they think of Kamala Harris?

What do people think of Kamala Harris?

Various polls have been made over recent months to find out what the public think of Vice-President Kamala Harris' chances against Donald Trump, after rumours Biden would step down.

As reported by Newsweek, the polls seem to be divided. In a poll by YouGov, with 1,582 adult US citizens, 39% of participants said they would vote for Harris if she was the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate, compared to 46% who said they would vote for Trump.

In another poll, by Bendixen & Amandi International, Harris came out on top by one point, with 42% of votes, compared to 41% for Donald Trump. When the poll had been Biden vs. Trump, the latter came out on top, with 43% for Trump, compared to 42% for Biden.

In a third poll, by Ipsos, Harris and Trump tied in a presidential mashup, with 44% of votes, but once again, when it was Biden vs. Trump, Trump came out on top, with 43% of votes compared to 41% for Biden.

While we have yet to see if Harris does end up being nominated and how she fares in polls once the decision is made, Donald Trump has already given his opinion. As reported by Reuters, Trump said on Sunday, July 21:

Harris will be easier to beat than Joe Biden would have been.

Before Biden announced he was no longer running for President, a leaked video showed that Trump was already talking about Biden stepping down. In the same leaked video, he talks about Harris, where he claims that she’s ‘pathetic’.

I think she's going to be better [jokingly]. She's so pathetic, she's so f*cking bad.
