Popular frozen fruit recalled over Listeria concerns
Scenic Fruit Company from Oregon, US is recalling its frozen organic pineapple and frozen fruit blends containing organic pineapple because of potential Listeria contamination.
The move was triggered by SunOpta Inc's subsidiary, Sunrise Growers Inc. issuing an alert about specific frozen fruit products containing pineapple provided by a third-party supplier.
In the recall notice, SunOpta and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have earlier warned about dozens of frozen fruit products sold at 6 major retailers in the US and urged consumers to check their freezers for the recalled product and to not consume it.
Those who purchased the frozen items are asked to discard them or return them to the store for a full refund. No receipt required.
There is concern that some consumers still have the recalled fruit in their homes because the best-by dates stretch into 2024.
The latest recalled varieties are:
- Cadia’s Organic Pineapple, 10 oz with UPC 815369014540 and best-before date 05/12/2024 - 09/08/2024; lot nr B2243316C0305067
- Trader Joe’s Organic Tropical Fruit Blend (Pineapple, Banana, Strawberry, Mango), 16 oz, with UPC 00511919 and best-before dates 04/24/24, 08/04/24, 10/13/24 and 11/04/24; lot nr B22098297, C20171035, C20450103 and C20511124.
Although there were no Listeria cases related to the product reported so far, consumers are advised to exercise caution and return this summer favourite to the stores.

Why is Listeria dangerous?
Listeria does not create any special smell and its presence in the food or water may go unnoticed. But the bug can still be serious and even life-threatening to your health.
Symptoms of Listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness.
Listeria contamination requires medical attention and lab tests to diagnose it.
People with a compromised immune system as well as pregnant women, children and the elderly are especially at risk of complications related to the dangerous bug.
