The world has been shocked this week by the brutal deaths of TV presenter Jesse Baird and his boyfriend Luke Davies. Police officer and former celebrity blogger Beaumont Lamarre-Condon had previously been charged with their murders, but refused to cooperate with investigators to help them locate the couple’s bodies.
However, on Tuesday 27 February, police confirmed that they had secured what is believed to be the remains of the two men. Eventually, Lamarre-Condon decided to tell them where to look, and the corpses were discovered in a property in Bungonia, four hours from Sydney. The crime itself is terrible, but there is also a creepy twist that dates back to last year. Baird had explained to friends at the time that he had seen a ‘shadowy figure at the end of his bed’, but it is unclear how relevant this is to the case. Let’s look into what we know so far, and what the police have said about Baird’s spooky report.
The crime
The alert was raised after gunshots were heard at Jesse’s home in the suburbs of Sydney. Dave Hudson, New South Wales Police Force Assistant Commissioner, explained that moments later there was actually a call logged from Jesse’s phone:
I can indicate on Monday, four minutes after the first shots were fired there was a Triple Zero call made from Jesse's phone, however, it disconnected.
Hudson added that they don’t know who made the call. Police started searching for the presenter and his flight attendant boyfriend Davies, and looking for a suspect. The attention turned to Lamarre-Condon after a bullet matching his police-issued gun was found at the crime scene and he didn’t turn up for work on February 20. He was named a person of interest when it was revealed that he used to be in a relationship with Baird.
Baird saw a ‘shadowy figure’ at the foot of his bed
It has since come to light that Baird experienced a creepy moment in 2023. He woke up to see what he described as a ‘shadowy figure’ at the end of his bed. However, Hudson explained that this may have happened while the 26-year-old presenter was still in a relationship with the man who would become his murderer:
There has been activity reported at that house which, in hindsight, appears suspicious, however at that stage in August last year, my understanding is they were still in some form of a relationship.
After moving the couple’s bodies in a white van to the property, and covering them with rocks and debris, Lamarre-Condon actually handed himself in to Bondi police on Friday.
Handgun ownership is taken very seriously in Australia, and the police are looking into how Lamarre-Condon managed to sign his weapon out and use it to kill these two young men while off duty. This is understood to be the first case of suspected murder at the hands of a New South Wales police officer in decades.
