Last month, Donald Trump became the first former president to be convicted as he was found guilty of 34 class E felonies in the Stormy Daniels hush money case. Weeks later, Joe Biden’s family has also created history as his son, Hunter Biden, became the first child of a sitting president to be a convicted felon, confirms Aljazeera. Reportedly Hunter Biden has been found guilty of three federal felony gun charges.

The first two include lying about his drug use on a federal background check form and the third one was for possessing a gun while being addicted to drugs. Notably, Hunter has been clean since 2019. As Hunter left the court after his verdict he was spotted with his mother Dr. Jill Biden and his wife Melissa Cohen Biden. Other Biden family members also appeared in court to support him.

Will Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden go to jail after a guilty verdict?

Hunter Biden now awaits sentencing on his guilty verdict. Judge Maryellen Noreika is expected to schedule a sentencing hearing in the next few weeks. In the interim, it is unlikely that he will be held in custody.

It is understood the sentencing will take place within 120 days of the verdict. It would take place at the latest by October 9 — less than a month before Joe Biden faces Donald Trump in the US presidential elections. This comes after Biden fought claims that he was ‘too old’ to run for president.

Based on the charges and as per the US Department of Justice, Hunter Biden could face prison time up to 25 years. However, such a sentence is highly unlikely. According to BBC, legal experts believe that even if he’s given a prison sentence, it’s likely he will only serve part of it. South Texas College of Law Houston professor Dru Stevenson said it would be ‘bizarre and unprecedented’ if Hunter received anything close to 5 years and added that’s for people who are ‘really dangerous.’ Others believe he could go to jail for a shorter time, like 20 months.

However, many believe that such a sentence is far-fetched sheerly based on the fact that Hunter is a nonviolent, first-time offender. He could potentially end up getting probation instead of prison. After the sentencing, Biden’s team will have 30 days to appeal and even in the case of a prison sentence, he would be given some time to turn himself in.

Joe Biden reacts to his Hunter Biden’s guilty verdict

Amidst this, the US president has assured the public that he wouldn’t pardon or commute his son’s sentence. Regardless of his guilty verdict, Biden revealed he loved his son and is proud of him for overcoming his addiction, confirms CBS. He said in a statement:

I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.

Adding:

I'm extremely proud of my son, Hunter. He has overcome an addiction. He's one of the brightest, most decent men I know. And I am satisfied that I'm not gonna do anything, I said I abide by the jury's decision. I will do that. And I will not pardon him.
