Kim Jong-un allegedly grief-stricken as he buries mentor amidst Covid-19 outbreak in North Korea

Tensions in North Korea are at an all-time high as the country is being hit by multiple crisis situations, all at once. It was reported by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) recently that Kim Jong-Un’s mentor, Hyon Chol-Hae, had passed away as a result of ‘multiple organ failure’. The North-Korean army marshal played a major role in Kim Jong-Un’s upbringing.

Kim Jong-Un grieves the loss

According to The Guardian, Hyon Chol-Hae taught the North Korean dictator the ways of a ruler and helped him become the person he is today. He played a significant part in 'grooming' Kim Jong-Un and preparing him to take over as the ruler of the country. The marshal was a bodyguard of Kim Jong-Un’s grandfather during the 1950-53 Korean War and held a noble position in the North-Korean military.

The marshal's funeral took place on Sunday, May 22, where the North-Korean dictator appeared grim-faced while carrying the coffin of his mentor, reports The Guardian. He then touched the top of his coffin while burying it and poured sand on top of it. The leader was also allegedly visibly upset as he mourned the loss of one of his oldest confidantes.

North-Korean Covid-19 crises

The dictator country seems to be hit hard by the Covid-19 wave that has already affected millions in just a few days. North Korea finally reported the spread of the omicron virus earlier this month. According to DailyMail, the state media reported the spread of an unknown illness with fever-like symptoms that had spread like wildfire and has affected approximately 2.8 million people. However, only 68 deaths have been reported so far, which is far less than the average mortality rate for Covid-19.
