Riding the wave of challenges of all kinds, the Paqui brand has designed what appears to be the hottest chip on earth. Challenging its customers to eat it without drinking anything afterwards to calm the effects of its chillies, Paqui has come up with a product that is a hit with fans of spicy foods. But what is this chip made of, which had to be suddenly withdrawn from the shelves after the tragic death of a teenager?

The One Chip Challenge, a product using two extremely hot peppers

Colourful packaging in the shape of a coffin, a name that directly evokes the various challenges trending on TikTok, a provocative advertising campaign that piques the pride of its target... There's no denying it, One Chip Challenge is a perfect product of its time.

It's just a simple crisp, sold in individual packets... Well, a crisp with a twist: it's capable of 'biting you back', because its makers have spiced it up so much. On its official website, we learn that this year it's made with two peppers: California Reaper and Scorpion Pepper. These are two of the hottest peppers in the world.

A teenager consumes the product and dies

The One Chip Challenge has gone from strength to strength, with TikTokers, youtubers and other content creators taking up the challenge to take the bite out of the product. While Paqui says that the chip should be 'kept out of reach of children', a growing number of teenagers have also wanted to try the challenge.

In Massachusetts, Harris Wolobah ate one of these crisps. Complaining of stomach pains, he had to be taken home and died the same day. The autopsy report has not yet been made public, and his death is not officially linked to Paqui's product.

Nonetheless, the brand has withdrawn the product from the market after issuing a statement saying:

While the Paqui One Challenge is intended for adults only, we have seen an increase in teen usage of the product.

It is technically possible to lose your life after eating spicy food, but to do so you need to consume a significant amount of chilli. Usually, the body naturally rejects the chilli consumed before reaching this point of no return.
