What went wrong for Cadbury?
Some customers who recently got their hands on Cadbury Milk Tray boxes have complained that their treats tasted horrible. One said:
We had one gifted and the chocolates taste like chemicals. They genuinely taste horrific, like bleach.
There is a concern that as most people won't open their trays until Christmas, they will be up for an unpleasant surprise on the big day.
First manufactured in 1915, Cadbury’s Milk Tray is still one of the UK's most popular chocolate treats and sells in millions as Christmas approaches. It became famous thanks to the 70s and 80s adverts where a James Bond-style character would leave a box for an unseen lover with a tagline ‘and all because the lady loves Milk Tray’.
Though Mondelez, the owner of Cadbury, has withdrawn two variants of the chocolate box, the others remain safe to consume and are available in most major supermarkets.
'No food safety concern'
According to Mondelez spokesman, the company has identified that the cardboard packaging in Milk Tray boxes ‘is in some instances not performing as it should’. The decision to withdraw 180g and 360g products from retailers in the UK was taken with immediate effect.
Mondelez commented:
While there is no food safety concern, we believe that withdrawing the product is the right thing. We are committed to producing and selling only the best quality products, and regretfully on this occasion, we have not met our own high standards.
The company also confirmed that neither Milk Tray in 78g and 530g boxes, nor any other Mondelez products are affected by the packaging issue.
