Russia becoming a ‘terrorist state’
On Tuesday, June 28, the United Nations (UN) held a virtual audience with the President of Ukraine. As reported by ABC News, Zelenskyy highlighted that Russia is becoming a ‘terrorist state’ and the Kremlin is carrying out ‘daily terrorist acts’.
Zelenskyy is urging the UN to hold Russia accountable for its crimes and to ‘investigate the actions of Russian occupiers on Ukrainian soil’.
President Zelenskyy told the UN as per HuffPost:
We need to act urgently to do everything to make Russia stop the killing spree
What is punished at the level of specific criminals and criminal organizations must not go unpunished at the level of a state that has become a terrorist.
Daily terrorist acts. No days off. They work as terrorists every day.
Adding that he believes Russia won’t stop with Ukraine and will advance on Europe and Asia.
Zelensky urges the UN to kick Russia out
President Zelenskyy touched up on another point during the UN meeting. He has urged the nations to kick Russia out. However, as ABC News explains, this is easier said than done.
Indeed as Russia is a permanent council member, they have the power to veto any attempt to kick them out.
To back up his demand, Zelenskyy cited article 6 of the UN chart which states:
[A member] which has persistently violated the principles contained in the present Charter may be expelled from the organization by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
