Tesco and Sainsbury's issue urgent recall on popular snack over choking hazard

The Food Standards Agency prompted an urgent recall of a popular snack sold at Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

The warning covers England, Scotland and Wales and is caused by fears that the product may contain pieces of plastic that can lead to choking.

Choking can kill in less than 10 minutes and results in hundreds of deaths yearly in the UK alone. Statistics show that NHS ambulances attended 26,594 call-outs due to this medical emergency which cost the system a whopping £6,701,688.

Meanwhile, an undeclared ingredient triggered a massive recall of popular snacks sold in most popular supermarket chains, these are the affected products.

Lidl has also removed this chocolate treat from their shelves over health concerns.

Choking hazard also made IKEA ditch this popular children's toy earlier this year.

Watch for pieces of plastic in this brand of houmous

FSA urged shoppers in England, Scotland and Wales to be careful with this popular snack over safety concerns.

Ramona's Heavenly Original Houmous was found to have pieces of plastic in it which prompted the warning to not eat it.

Sold in Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons, it can pose a serious risk to your health and even lead to death. The popular dip retails for £3 and is also available online.

As not all the batches are affected, customers are asked to check the best-before date before consuming the product and to give it up completely if it comes from the potentially deadly batch.

The batch of Ramona’s Heavenly Original Houmous you shouldn’t eat has an expiry date of July 28 and comes in a 500g pack.

The FSA explained:

The possible presence of plastic presents a possible choking hazard and makes this product unsafe to eat.

Here is what to do if you purchased the product

According to FSA, point-of-sale notices have been issued in all stores that sell the product.

If you happened to purchase it, you’re entitled to a full refund. All you need to do is bring the product over, no receipt is required.

The offer of a refund only applies to the affected batch.

Ramona's brand stated that the ‘do not eat’ warning was ‘a precautionary measure’.

Their spokesperson said:

We are really sorry about this but delivering the best quality product is our number one priority and we cannot take the risk of you finding plastic in the product.
