It's a person who has intrigued the scientific community. In a study published on Monday 4 March 2024, by The Lancet Infectious Diseases, scientists from Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and the University of Erlangen looked at the case of a German man from the city of Magdeburg (in central Germany). The reason? The 62-year-old had been vaccinated 217 times against Covid-19. He mainly received Arn-messenger vaccine injections, from several different laboratories.

Doctors had never seen anything like it

Dr. Kilian Schober, in charge of the study, writes on their university website:

We heard about his case through newspaper articles.

The experts therefore wanted to understand the effects of this hypervaccination by testing his blood and saliva. Dr. Kilian Schober explained:

We used these samples to determine exactly how the immune system reacts to vaccination.

And the results surprised the scientists. The people in charge of the study noted the presence of large numbers of T cells, which help to destroy coronavirus-infected cells. They also found that these cells showed no signs of immune response fatigue. According to the analyses, no trace of past infection by the virus was detected.

A vaccination schedule not recommended

The scientists reiterate, however, that the use of hypervaccination to boost immunity is not recommended. They explain on their website:

Current research indicates that three-dose vaccination, combined with regular supplementary vaccinations for vulnerable groups, remains the preferred approach.

The study came as a surprise to many experts, who claim to have never heard of such a case.

Why did the man do it?

The story was also shared in the French publication Libération which reports that the reason behind the man multiple vaccinations was none other than crime. They explain that the German made was part of a vaccination card trafficking scheme. An investigation had been opened and uncovered all the vaccinations.

What happened to him?

According to the scientists from The Lancet Infectious Diseases, something unheard of happened: nothing. Indeed, apart from the common vaccination side effects such as tiredness and a sore arm, the man is not suffering from any consequences.

Libération also reports that, though hypervaccination should usually have an impact on the immune system, that isn't the case for this man.
