Abandoned in a blistering heat
Harvest was just 10 months old when her owner heartlessly abandoned her in the scorching summer heat. A woman who spotted her in a residential neighbourhood was shocked to find an animal sitting in a cardboard box without any food or water. She was likely left there overnight. Despite the horrific conditions, Harvest fatefully stayed put, The Dodo writes.
Patti Dawson, president of Dallas Dog, said:
She never moved from the box. She was just waiting for someone to come back.
A cardboard home
The heartbroken puppy had to be carried to the shelter in her 'Premium Harvest seasoned diced potatoes'cardboard box because she refused to leave it, holding on to the hope her owner would come back for her. The shelter workers left her there, suspecting she was paralysed. They placed the puppy and her box in a kennel.
The traumatised pooch spent the first few days at the shelter cowering in the corner of her kennel. Patti Dawson said that they ‘could just see her shoulders and body trembling from fear’. Though she eventually crawled out of the box, Dallas Dog volunteers decided to leave her cardboard home with her, realising ‘it was her security’.
This is how she got her name Harvest too - after the box.
In search of a loving home
Despite the fear and heartbreak, Harvest slowly started to blossom in the shelter, showing her sweet demeanour to everyone.
Luckily, two weeks after the rescue someone offered her a temporary but loving home. The pooch is now ‘full of energy and loves running around with her foster siblings’, according to her foster mum. Harvest finds comfort and safety in cuddling on the couch and watching TV with her family.
Patti Dawson said:
It took her about a week before she really opened up, and she hasn’t slowed down or looked back since.
Harvest is now in desperate need of a loving forever homeso that she never has to make use of a cardboard one again. The Dallas Dog staff believe that thanks to her sweet nature, it won't take long for her to find a perfect family.
