Well, technically speaking, dimples are a birth defect. Cheek dimples are thought to be formed by divides in a facial muscle called the zygomaticus major. Although they are a genetic defect, dimples have no effect on the body, other than making you look cute. We know that they are formed very early on in our development because they can even be seen on ultrasounds. Also, dimples don't always form in pairs, many people will have a dimple on one cheek but not the other!
