Brits heading on vacations outside of the UK in May have been warned that many popular European destinations are in for a scorching heat, as temperatures in some parts of Spain are already climbing to the high 30s in the second heatwave this year.

Forecasters have warned that almost no Spanish city will drop below 20C this long weekend as the country continues to battle high temperatures into next week with no rain clouds spotted on the horizon.

Heatwave will grip all of Spain

Brits planning their holidays this month have been warned Spain is already sizzling in its second heatwave this year.

Many areas saw the temperatures skyrocket to 38C in ‘summer-like temperatures’ this weekend despite it being only the beginning of May. Forecasters predict that almost no Spanish city will drop below 20C in the coming days as the country continues to battle the heatwave into next week with no rain clouds spotted on the horizon.

The entire week will be warm, with slight fluctuations, but temperatures are likely to remain above average, or even much higher depending on the region.

Although the heatwave will not be as extreme or long-lasting as the previous week, it is still expected to worsen the already serious drought situation.

What areas of Spain are affected?

Mr Granda, from Eltiempo.es, warned that temperatures could exceed 30C in many areas, including the valleys of the Guadalquivir, the Tagus, the Guadiana, and the Ebro, as well as on the Cantabrian coast.

While popular tourist destinations like Barcelona and Ibiza will be a bit chillier and linger around the mid-20s, areas further down south, including Seville will be well above 30C.

Granda said:

On Wednesday this new peak will be at its highest in the north, which is where the rise will be most noticeable, and in parts of the centre, while temperatures will drop in Galicia, the southwest and the southeast, but it will still be hot for the season.

In Santander, temperatures are expected to reach 29C, while in Bilbao, where temperatures should be around 21C or 22C, they could rise to 34C or 35C, depending on the wind direction.

While some areas will experience a drop in temperature on Thursday, the heat will continue in many parts of the country, and there is no significant relief in sight.

The forecaster said that for the second week of the month ‘everything seems to indicate that we will continue with very warm temperatures in a large part of the country and very little rain’.

Granda added:

The dynamic already seems totally summer-like and it's still May.

Meanwhile, in the UK, unsettled conditions continue as showed prevailed throughout the King's Coronation.
