The report by Which? is done each month and compares 149 everyday items from 8 different supermarket chains, including Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose. Normally the price war is between Aldi and Lidl with all the larger chains being more expensive, however for the bigger shopping trip Adsa tops the list as the cheapest, as per The Sun.
Big shop
The report focuses on two different sized shopping trolleys and Asda has been consistently the cheapest on the big shop every month since January. The shop consists of 149 items and includes some branded items such as Andrex toilet paper and Cathedral City cheese.
As you can see from the list below, Waitrose comes in at a huge £38.03 more expensive than Asda so there are big savings to be had. As such, Which? crowned the chain as the ‘cheapest traditional supermarket’.

Sainsbury's - £366.83

However, the other study in the report looked at a smaller shopping trolley that consisted of only 48 items and omitted a lot of the big brands. In this report, Aldi came out cheapest overall, only just beating Lidl by £1.36 but beating Waitrose by a shocking £26.90

Whilst the reports are accurate for these specific shops, they can vary over time depending on the items in your trolley and what items are on offer. However, it is generally a good indicator of which are the cheaper supermarkets in the UK. If you want to have a better idea of how it will affect your shop, you can always do your own research by going on price comparison websites like trolley.co.uk.
