After several warnings over recent months, Windows 8.1 will stop receiving technical support from January 10 which will leave users susceptible to cyber attacks unless they choose to upgrade.

Cyber threats

When an operating system stops receiving support from its manufacturer, it means that bugs and glitches can not be fixed and it will no longer receive software or security updates. This can cause security issues making users vulnerable to malware and hackers.

Whilst Windows 8.1 will continue to function, Microsoft explains the risks on its Windows support pages:

While you could continue to use a PC running Windows 8.1, without continued software and security updates, your PC will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. We recommend upgrading to a version of Windows that is still supported. A new device that can run Windows 11 makes for an easy transition and a great experience.

The latest stats show that around 2.5% of the world's PCs still have this software installed so millions of people will be faced with having to upgrade, as per The Daily Express.

Windows 11

Whilst the upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 is free, the route from 8.1 is not so clear with Microsoft explaining:

We do not currently offer free upgrade paths from Windows 8.1 to either Windows 10 or Windows 11. If you want to purchase a copy of Windows 10 or Windows 11, please see links above or contact a retailer to find out about options.

In addition to this, users could be hit by further costs as many older devices do not meet the system requirements for Windows 11. The operating system needs a powerful processor and a TPM 2.0 - Trusted Platform Module - a security feature built into hardware on newer devices.

It is thought that new laptops capable of running Windows 11 are generally available for around £400 and above but it’s a costly expense that will leave many unhappy.
