As the war continues, Vladimir Putin’s popularity in Russia seems to be growing weaker as the population is rebelling against the war. Indeed, Ukraine has been launching several counteroffensives, as per Express, and at least one of them was a major success.
However, a US expert has warned that even though Putin’s plans for Ukraine aren’t going his way, he remains a threat to the world and now is when he could be most dangerous.
Ukraine is fighting back against Russia
As reported by Express, Ukrainian forces have been launching several counteroffensives against the Russian military in recent weeks. In fact, Ukraine’s forces launched a huge attack on the Black Sea Fleet HQ.
As a result, Russian forces reported hundreds of thousands of casualties during this conflict, leading to morale in Russia dropping even further.
Moreover, these setbacks have allegedly caused tensions within the Kremlin and a potential for another coup against the Russian President. Indeed, the former chief of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, led a military coup against Putin on June 23, 2023.
US expert warns that Vladimir Putin will be a threat until he dies
Despite Vladimir Putin's struggles with the war in Ukraine, Washington-based foreign policy expert, Nile Gardiner, explained that the Russian President will remain a threat until the day he dies.
Indeed, Gardiner told Daily Express US that the world should not ‘underestimate him’ and that he remains 'an extraordinarily dangerous figure':
He has been weakened somewhat in recent months by the setbacks in Ukraine and the attempted coup by the Wagner Group, but he is still an extraordinarily dangerous figure and we should never underestimate him.
Adding:
I suspect we will have to face the threat from Putin for several more years, at least, as long as he is alive.
Gardiner then explains that Putin is similar to a wounded animal, and that is when they are most dangerous:
Quite often, wounded animals are more dangerous, and Putin fits that dynamic.
