Direct warning
Amid soaring tensions between the US, its allies, and North Korea, the Pentagon has issued a direct warning to Pyongyang.
On Thursday, three major US defense policy documents were published, namely the National Defense Strategy, the Nuclear Posture Review and the Missile Defense Review.
The reports outline the steps that the US will take to deter and defend against security challenges posed amongst others also by China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.
Last month the US National Security Strategy was published and it just briefly mentioned North Korea.
As opposed to that, the language of the National Security Strategynow conveys a direct and explicit warning to Kim Jong-un's government, Newsweek reports.
'Any nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its Allies and partners is unacceptable and will result in the end of that regime. There is no scenario in which the Kim regime could employ nuclear weapons and survive.'
Disregarding US warnings
Recently, Kim Jong-un has personally supervised the tests of ballistic missiles which are able to carry nuclear warheads, and reports suggest there have been over twelve tests this year alone.
Just 24 hours after the Pentagon published its strategic reports, North Korea seems to have disregarded the warnings.
The Washington Post reports today that South Korea's military has identified two missile launches from its northern foe. The pariah state has test-fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the open Sea.
'South Korea strongly condemns the launches, calling them a grave provocation that undermines regional peace and violates U.N. Security Council resolutions banning any ballistic activities by North Korea.'
