‘This conflict could become a world war’
In an interview with Hungarian public radio on Friday Viktor Orban warned of the growing risk of World War 3. He blamed the West for supplying Ukraine with ‘more and more modern equipment’ and contributing to this terrifying scenario.
He alsoadmitted that his country’s security ‘is being jeopardised’ because, in his opinion, European politicians were trying to drag Hungary into the ‘worrying and dangerous' conflict.

According to the Hungarian PM, ‘the threat of world war is not a literary exaggeration’.
He said:
When European and American leaders say that if this continues, we could end up in a third world war, it seems incredibly exaggerated at first, but where I work and where I see the events, this is a real danger at this moment.
Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Viktor Orban appeared reluctant to condemn Vladimir Putin. Hungary has also angered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by refusing to send weapons to Kyiv.
He has also previously said that western sanctions on Russia have failed.
The politician believes ‘a ceasefire must be achieved’ and it will give ‘a chance for preparing the framework for peace talks’.
Is Hungary supporting Russia in this war?
Despite Viktor Orban’s reluctance to criticise Vladimir Putin for its invasion of Ukraine and the two leaders’ seemingly close relationship, Moscow included the country on its list of ‘unfriendly countries’ this week.
Russia's envoy to Budapest, Yevgeny Stanislavov explained that Hungary's membership of the EU was part of the reason.
He added:
Hungary has signed all the anti-Russian sanctions packages of Brussels and is forced to strictly comply with them.
That is why it is classified as a country unfriendly to Russia, against which our retaliatory measures can be applied.
However, he said that Moscow was ‘optimistic’ that there would be ‘constructive interaction with Hungary.’
Stanislavov added:
Budapest demonstrates a pragmatic position, which is not going to give up even under pressure from its allies in the EU and NATO.
