Not everyone has the courage to go against one of the most powerful leaders in the world, and survive to tell the tail. Unfortunately, this was not the case for Anna Politkovskaya, who was a 48-year old journalist in Russia. The sad demise of Anna was due to the fact that she dared to speak out against the injustice happening in her country. Sadly she paid a very hefty price for criticising Vladimir Putin.

Anya’s Journey
Recently, the website, Le Monde, paid tribute to a journalist named Anna Politkovskaya. Anna was particularly popular for her book called Putin's Russia which describes in vivid detail the injustice that happened in Russia under Putin's rule. She was shot dead exactly 2 years after the launch of her bookon Vladimir Putin’s birthday on 7 October 2006. Published in English and translated into most European languages, her book was available in France from Buchet-Chastel in 2005.
Her book highly criticised the Russian government and exposed many hidden secrets of the Russian President himself as well. In her book, she comments on the desensitised demeanour of Putin towards people. She also spoke of ‘cynicism’ and ‘racism’ on his part.
She says:
I don't like him because he doesn't like human beings. He cannot stand us. He despises us.
Sharp criticism of the KGB
Anna worked as a reporter for a Russian newspaper calledNovaya Gazeta. She mentioned her extreme dislike of the KGB, where Putin was trained as an agent himself. The journalist felt that the KGB made Putin the man he is today and it plays a significant role in his current beliefs and future goals. She explained:
Putin behaves this way not deliberately, not because he is a born tyrant or despot. He has been brought up that way. That's what he was taught in the KGB. The KGB only respects the strong, it devours the weak.
Isn't it up to us to know this? And yet, for the most part, we have been weak and crushed. To the Soviet Chekist, our fear is honey. There is no better gift for him than to see the crowds tremble and submit to his will.
