The war between Russia and Ukraine has been raging for more than a year now. But for Russian President Vladimir Putin, this is not the end of the story - he dreams of a Greater Russian Empire that would include not only Ukraine, but also Georgia, Belarus, and Moldova.

As BILD reports, research has been undertaken by Delfi Estonia, Swedish newspaper Expressen, the London-based Dossier Center, Kyiv Independent, Rise Moldova, Frontstory, VSquare, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Westdeutscher Rundfunk and Norddeutscher Rundfunk. Secret papers of the Russian presidential administration have now come to light, which provide information on exactly how the Kremlin leader plans to implement his goal of securing influence in Moldova.
Russia wants to destabilise the pro-European government
According to BILD, Moldova is located between Romania and Ukraine and has always been a thorn in Russia's side because of its rapprochement with the West. Russian troops have been stationed in the Transnistria region on the border with Ukraine since the 1990s - numerous demands for the withdrawal of these troops have not been heeded to date.
Putin now plans to prevent the Moldovan government's increasing orientation toward the West by building on Moldova's 'interest in the Russian sales market' to prevent the government from 'harming Russian interests in the region'.

Risk of Russian invasion 'very high'
Building a 'broad presence of Russian media' by 2030 is also intended to control public opinion in Moldova more tightly and sow negative attitudes toward NATO by means of propaganda channels. To move Moldova more toward a pro-Russian orientation, it would be enticed with admission to organisations such as the Eurasian Economic Union or the Collective Security Treaty Organization military alliance.
The Moldovan government, however, strongly opposes Kremlin moves to destabilise Moldova - just last Sunday 12 March, a Russian-sanctioned network in the country was exposed. Nevertheless, it says it is also bracing for a Russian incursion. Moldovan intelligence chief Alexandru Musteata assesses this risk as 'very high', as BILD further reports.
